What is a cleansing balm, and how does it differ from a regular cleanser?
A cleansing balm comes in a solid or buttery form that typically contains a blend of oils, waxes and emollients. Designed to break down and dissolve makeup, dirt, impurities and excess sebum while delivering hydration and nourishment, many balm cleansers melt into oil once warmed by the fingers and emulsify into a liquid once you add water to the formula.
The key difference between a cleansing balm and a regular cleanser lies in their formulation and mode of action. While regular cleansers, such as gel or foaming cleansers, primarily rely on water-based formulations, makeup cleansing balms utilise oil-based formulations.
Although cleansing balms are known for delivering a gentle yet effective cleanse that doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils, the buttery formula may not be suitable for all skin types — especially those prone to congestion or excessive oiliness. Balm cleansers are ideal for those with dry, sensitive or mature skin who desire mild yet effective cleansing with added hydration.
Do I need to double cleanse when using the nourishing cleansing balm?
If you have oily, acne-prone and problematic skin, we recommend using our cleansing balm or Micellar Treatment Gel as the first deep cleanse in your routine and following up with our Gentle Antioxidant Cleanser or Corrective Cleanser & Peel.
